The assumption that to get most traffic you have to submit to as many directories as possible is a wrong one. Most of the directories out there are useless as far as traffic goes, so it doesn’t make much sense to submit to them other than to get backlinks.

The first tip I will post on this blog on how to get targeted traffic would be to follow the crowd. Start thinking in terms of people, not numbers. Traffic is visitors who are real people and the people you want to visit your site can be found in very specific places online. Allow me to explain.

Let’s say you’re an avid reader and like reading books as well as discussing them with others. Naturally you will be a part of one or more communities online, usually forums. So if you had a website about books and wanted to get visitors who are avid readers, you would go out there and find all those communities where these people are.

Starting with forums is one of the easiest and surest ways to get very targeted traffic, either free or buying ad space.
